The American writer James Baldwin argued that “Western humanism is a lie.” Both Blacks and Jews have strong reasons to support that view. In this lecture, Senior lecturer, Jean Cahan will respond by looking at the work of two great Western philosophers, and respond that humanism is not a lie, merely a half-truth. This lecture is co-sponsored by UNL’s Harris Center for Judaic Studies and the Department of Philosophy. It will be given in person in Louise-Pound Hall Room 124 from 5-6 pm on Wednesday, February 24th, as well as online through Zoom. A question and answer session will be conducted by Dr. Cahan over the final 20 minutes of the lecture.
