are we supposed to use ZOOM for office hours? we were going to try “conference” within canvas because we thought the students would have an easier time using one software program. does it matter?
Manda Williamson
34:38
conference likely is more easily overwhelmed by traffic. we recommend zoom, please
Robert Vavala
34:43
Conferences works but it has limitations
Stephen Scott
37:00
FYI, Zoom will also have issues down the road. downdetector.com has reported two Zoom issues in the past two days. Load is increasing due to meetings and multiple institutions ramping up use. So be flexible and prepared for problems.
Manda Williamson
37:49
I think Chad indicated yesterday they are buying up tons of bandwidth…if that is even the right word..so fingers crossed
Manda Williamson
38:20
But speaks to the importance of NOT using zoom for lesson delivery, for sure.

I have been creating .mp4 videos of my lectures but I am running out of storage space in Canvas. Is there a way of increasing storage space, or do I need to use another technique for getting my lectures Into Canvas?
Arden
39:07
When I taught online, I also had phone meeting with students where we both had a copy of their paper in front of us. Students liked this option and I actually kept it as an option for my in person classes as well.
Manda Williamson
39:29
Please save them to box-you see the small box icon in her text editor-you can link them there.
Robert Vavala
39:46
You can avoid the space issue in Canvas by storing the videos in VidGrid
Manda Williamson
39:54
Otherwise, drop them into your own vidgrid and you can also link directly to vidgrd-she is going to demo.
Manda Williamson
40:27
Sorry, Robert. I keep forgetting I don’t need to chime in!!
Chad Brassil
43:22
The main thing to keep in mind with Zoom is the limitations of students. They may have bandwidth issues and/or timing issue in their life in trying to get online at a given time. With a small group, you may be able to check in with everyone on their access and time. In a large, group that is going to be difficult. That is why reimagining as asynchronous is the general recommendation.
Manda Williamson
43:54
question: asking why not to use canvas recording option
Manda Williamson
44:05
“because it won’t capture the items on your screen"
Chad Brassil
46:12
If classroom discussions are part of your pedagogy, consider Discussions in Canvas or Yellowdig (which supports a mix of text, video, and easily grades students for participation). Yellowdig can be integrated into Canvas (via LTI). Both are sanctioned UNL technology.

54:13
would it be possible to obtain a screen shot of the Important Course Information section of the sample course used at the beginning of the session today?
Manda Williamson
55:09
This is being recorded, so you can go back and view everything once we load it (check tonight)
Chad Brassil
01:02:12
I did a screen capture of the requested "Important Course Information" page. It is spread across two images, which can be found at 1:https://unl.box.com/s/jdgzyzmrdr0fi8h7s2yc3v1l70n1uikyand 2:https://unl.box.com/s/0xmtffw9wxwx2k7m7ixtnjsowmskmafi

Just wanted to let you know—zoom videos are delayed in being transferred to our folders…our sessions from yesterday still haven’t uploaded. Another reason to say away from zoom recordings…sorry for the delay
knashleanas
01:02:16
If I set up Zoom office hours every week, can I set them up once to repeat every week, or do I have to set up a new Zoom every time I want to set up an office hour for all students?
Arden
01:03:00
you can set them to do weekly just by clicking a button
Robert Vavala
01:03:24
You can do either, K. https://go.unl.edu/zoom_setup
Taylor Livingston
01:03:34
Go to the "my meetings" tab and set up a meeting to repeat. You can add that to the Canvas site
christianejensen
01:04:21

christianejensen
01:04:35
no
Manda Williamson
01:06:53
It was discussed. My advice would be to try it, since it is what you and your students (especially) are used to…if it doesn’t work, then switch to zoom.
